For the 5-year Clinical Medicine (English-medium), applicants must have successfully completed basic science courses at university level and may graduate earlier subject to further review and approval by our Undergraduate Education Office.
For non-native English-speaking applicants for the English-medium program: TOEFL (a minimum overall score of 80), or IELTS Academic (a minimum overall score of 6.0), or a medium-of-instruction certificate from the previous school/university, or equivalent. Exemptions can be granted to applicants who have graduated in English-speaking countries.
Do not bring family members to live with you in Shantou while you are studying at SUMC.

Program Description
1. Program Introduction
Editor Notes: The pass rates in China's National Medical Licensure Examination have retained 100% (vs the national average pass rate 20%), while our selected students have achieved a pass rate of 93-98% in the USMLE exams in the past years.
This is an MBBS program, and Shantou University is one of the 45 universities on the List of Universities Approved by the MOE China about offering MBBS English-taught Program, but since Shantou University's tradition, the name of the program will be "Clinical Medicine" on admission letter and "临床医学" on graduation certificate(Usually Chinese universities are only allowed to issue graduation certificate in Chinese). But you don't need to worry about it since Shantou University is not only recognized by MOE of China but also a lot of medical councils in other countries, so as long as it was recognized by the medical council of your country, it will not influence you to hunt a related job.
The program has been registered with the International Medical Education Directory (IMED) of the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER). Students are encouraged to take part in the international assessments and exams such as United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). The pass rates of our students in China's National Medical Licensure Examination have retained 100% (vs the national average pass rate 20%), while our selected students have achieved a pass rate of 93-98% in the USMLE exams in the past years. Our international graduates have gained their residency positions in USA, Thailand and Malaysia. The program is five to six years in duration and leads to a bachelor degree. Applicants who have successfully completed university courses / A-Level / IB / AP / STPM / UEC or equivalent including Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry are eligible to apply for exemption for these courses and may graduate earlier subject to approval by our Teaching Department.

3. International Assessment System
Editor Notes: OSCE and TOSCE have been used to assess students' performance.
To assess student performance, we use internationally accepted assessment instruments such as Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), Teaching Objective Structured Clinical Examination (TOSCE).
Our students are also encouraged to take part in international assessments and exams such as United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). The pass rates of our students in China's National Medical Licensure Examination have retained 100% (vs the national average pass rate 20%), while our selected students have achieved a pass rate of 93-98% in the USMLE exams in the past few years.
Several of our graduates have gained the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification and obtained a medical residency position in USA. Some of our international students have gained their residency positions in USA, Thailand and Malaysia.
4. Research Opportunities
Editor Notes: This program pays much attention to students' research abilities, especially to cultivate students' scientific thinking and scientific attitude.
Strengthening the training of the research abilities of our students is also an important part of our "top-notch education". Vigorous scientific training and cultivation of students' scientific thinking and scientific attitude have been incorporated into our teaching plan. Students will be offered with laboratory instructions and research opportunities.
5. Graduation, Degree and Commencement
Editor Notes: Upon meeting the requirements of graduation, students will be awarded a Bachelor's Degree of Medicine accredited by the Ministry of Education of China.
In order to graduate with a Bachelor's Degree from SUMC, you must
- Make sure you satisfy all SUMC requirements;
- Complete all the required courses and pass all the required examinations;
- Fulfill your financial obligations to the school.
Upon successful completion of the program, a Bachelor's Degree of Medicine accredited by the Ministry of Education of China will be awarded.
Commencement for all graduating students is held every year in June. It is a university-wide event. Families, friends, and guests are invited to celebrate this important milestone with their graduates.

The Foreign Affairs Office (FAO) is the official administrative department of Shantou University Medical College (SUMC) on implementing the SUMC international policies and on coordinating its international exchanges and cooperation. The passport should be valid until at least March 1, 2025. Applicants who are within China, a valid residence visa in China should be attached.
*3. Physical Examination Record with laboratory test results
The physical examination record should be attached with reports of blood tests and other laboratory tests. It should be completed in Chinese or English, and bear the physician's signature and hospital stamp, valid for 6 months counting from the date of issue.

-Please note that this document is valid for only 3 months. For instance, if you submit your -application in April, your non-criminal record must have been issued no earlier than January.
-Obtain a police clearance certificate from the local police station where you currently reside, confirming no criminal record in the past 6 months at the time of application.
-You need to translated it into CHINESE if it is not in Chinese; Then you need to get it notarized by local notary office and then get it certified by local Chinese embassy; If your country has joined the HAGUE convention then just do the Chinese translation and Apostille; Then you may need to mail original copy of non-criminal record and translation & certified(or Apostille) documents to the university in China.
